Planning to Cycle from St Davids to Lowestoft
Why and How?Cycling from one side of the country to the other was my idea after cycling Lands End to John O'Groats the year before. We raised money for Sport Relief, having undergone a 24 hour swimathon a few weeks before departing. However, we considered this journey as our holiday, and therefore paid any expenses ourselves. We do not believe in using sponsorship money to pay for our little jollies, and hence ALL money raised has gone to the charities. Booking B&B'sHaving chosen the route, we were then very limited in certain areas of the country for finding accommodation. To avoid being homeless on any night, we considered booking B&B's in advance, but following my cycle up the country we chose a different approach. This time we took a list of B&B's along the route, so we could find the closest to our planned destination for the night and phone them up. It worked a treat. Much less stressful than booking up in advance and having the concern over whether we would make it or not.Where possible we used the CTC's list of B&B's in their members book. Alternatively we used the AA B&B Guide (either on the internet or the book), and our last chance was uk.yell.com which is the internet yellow pages. Unfortunately you use yell.com blind, with often no idea of how good or bad the B&B may be. Journey to St Davids and Coming HomeGetting to the start was easy for us because thankfully Nigel's parents offered to drive us. Trains are another option, although the journey is long. Getting back was more tricky, but only because we made it that way. Taking the train home is fairly straightforward because there is a train station at Lowestoft that is a direct link to Norwich. From there you can access London etc.
